After a COMMIT error, #136 decides from a cold reopen whether the edit landed. If that reopen itself fails, for example with too many open files or a busy error, the section fails closed and answers every edit waiting in memory with an error while the canvas still shows them. Retrying the cold open on the 1 s tick would keep them, but the sync worker stops on its first error from the placeholder connection and would need restarting.
